Adding the animation will lower the quality of the file (animated gifs do not have the same range of colours as jpeg or png files, especially one you start optimizing the file-size to reduce your bandwidth).

In addition to that, many people (myslef included) think that the movement only really serves as a distraction.

Ah, I did not know that about the quality thing. learn something new everyday. I agree then, globe=bad idea. Any thoughts regarding the other suggestions, in my illustrated example ?

Sully, V7, initially i was looking at the graphics and got confused about what the brown streaks were on Beijing, Honk Kong and Seoul, until i realised they were place markers....I don't know about those place markers ;) They could be confusing.
also why is Singapore where Manilla is?...or just a left over error?

Well, I think it is a safe bet that the master of this site will not support a flagship map with browser-specific features. Plus, I think the animated globe was given a test drive well before porkenbeans put one up, and the most common comment was that it was too distracting or just looked cheesy.

I am against it if it diminishes the quality of the graphics. If there is a way where it doesn't, well, I am not distracted at all. How silly of a notion. If something like that distracts you, perhaps you should just leave the game to those that do not have such a silly hangup. :lol:
OH, and I believe that the "flagship" map should be special. A cut above the rest, as it were. A stick in the mud never goes anywhere, and drowns beneath the waves, when the new tide comes in.

Special enough that not everyone can play it?

Speciality is one thing... but as was said, only certain browsers support this format, so I don't think it would be good to use it for any map, let alone the most popular map on the site.

But the flagship map should also be unspecial. It's the default map, the one new players start on and the one that other maps deviate off of. The flagship map sets the norm; the flagship map should be normal.

but in a classy way.. no gimmicks of any kind, just the purity of a simple world map, easily recognized locations and connections, easy on the eyes... a timeless map, new and old at the same time... lol, why that is the very essence of neo-classical... O:)

Like I said before, If the turning globe should have any adverse effects on the quality of the graphics, or can not be supported by all browsers, then it is not a very good idea. The case for simple and easy on the eyes graphics, Yes, this is indeed the ticket. Check out my illustration of what I think the classic map should be. It is simple and very easy to read, with clear attack routes. The scale of title and legend are understated to the proportion of the game board itself. The title itself does not have to be so large that it becomes the center and/or the focus of the map. Instead it is demure in size and attitude. It screams CLASSIC, with a whisper. The colors are not faded or washed out. Instead they are vibrant with color, without being bold. I believe that my illustration is closer to being what you might see a Hasbro, or Milton Bradley roll out.
I have for a few months now been competing, and learning a great deal about professional graphics at a site called 99 Designs. I suggest that CC step it up a level or two by holding a contest there. Instead of relying on a hand full of amateurs to produce our Classic, CC can pony up as little as $200 or $300, and see what dozens of pros can come up with. If there is not a entry among the hundreds of entries, that does not float your boat, you just do not declare a winner. Let me tell you that I have not seen this happen very often. you can run the contest for as long or as short as you like. Most run for a week or two. You can give feedback to the entrants, to guide them to what you are looking for. These guys and girls are pros from all around the globe. They design every day for the top corporations in the business world today. Even the amateurs here at CC can compete in this contest. 99 Designs is free to join.
I would love to see CC hold a contest there. And I would love to compete for the honor of creating Conquer Club"s signature map. The prize money would be nice also. :D

What would it say about the rest of our maps if our main one had to be designed by professionals?

The one Sully has designed is nice, simple, and "Classic". I like it and I think most others do too. It is cleaner than the old one. A moving globe, compass, or any other gimmicks would I think detract from it. :|

Well, its like I said, There is nothing to stop anyone from entering the contest. And since Sully is a CC alumni, he just my have an upper foot if you know what I mean. My suggestion goes strictly to the issue of acquiring the best Flagship of a map as we possibly can. If that turns out to be Sully's, Then that is great. But I think that it would be better for CC in the end to leave the choice up to its members. And when I say it's members, I do not mean the Foundry. For a special occasion like this a ballot should be sent via pm to every CC member. The Foundry can determine the finalists that will be on the ballot.

The map has all the stamps, sans XML, it needs to get quenched. I think we need to stay off the "redo the map! Make a contest!" conversation, and more on the little details that will make this map better. The animated globe discussion is a good one, but I think I can safely say that's not going t ohappen.

Personally, I don't like having 3 globes. The way each globe is a representation of "half" earth, but yet that there are three somewhat suggest there are three halves (?). Just a personal quirk. It works well, so you don't really have to change it.

I agree that the 3-globe way is more awkward than having two globes. Though the globes in general are a little awkward to me, the way they stick out spherically on top of the flat map. They draw the eye away from the actual territory network, which I think you should avoid.

Everybody who has poured their heart and soul into the foundry over the past couple of years would have loved to get their hands on a revamp - and we initially believed that there would be on open competition for it. However, this is not the way it has panned out, and you should be grateful that there is any revamp happening at all!

The map in its current guise (or future incarnations thereof) will be the definitive Classic Map. It is therefore inevitable that it will have the full support of the Foundry Illuminati Foreman.

The show must go on!

Plus, REVAMPs of future maps always may come around as needed---there are a couple of maps currently up that could use a spruce perhaps. ;) But that is Benn's dept.

And it also makes no sense since the entire premise of this map is that we are using cities. My goal from the start has been to make a map of important world cities. Cities are distinct points, not regions or territories, so the current construction is the only system that makes sense.
