Question about the scoring formula

Postby agarvin on Sat May 06, 2006 8:57 am

I was muttering about losing a game recently where there was a moderate spread of difference between my points and the winner, and was wondering:
Is there an upper limit on the number of points you can lose in a single game?

You know, if a player ever managed to lose enough games to put his score under 10, then a single victory could propel that player into the highest of ranks, while leaving the loser with negative points.

Say, a person with 8 points loses against me and a brand-new player in a 3-way game:
(1267 / 8) * 20 + (1000 / 8) * 20 = 3167 + 2500 = 5667

It would be difficult to achieve that low a score, with the formula, since one tends to lose less points as one's score goes down, but could be done with multiple accounts or cooperation by playing private games with other players with low points.

As far as I know I don't think there is any limit and if i remember correctly i believe there might actually be people trying to do just that...

I am trying to reach the bottom so I can beat belzbub or someone with a massive score and throw them into minuses

That's really shitty if it happens to anyone. I get pissed if I lose more than 30 points in a game. Though that said, I found the thought of it really funny when I was back languishing around the 1000s. I think if I see anyone drop below 300 I'm gonna just stick them on my ignore list.

I think a 100/200 pt loss limit might be a good idea...

Now, this is seriously worrying... I'm a democratic player and like to console my enormous losses to newbs with fantasies of myself as a charitable madman, just throwing points around like confetti, but this math-stuff is just too much. 100 point loss limit, please!
