I’ve brought probably two dozen or so people here over the years. All have left and nearly all have the same comment.

When they make an app let me know.

People don’t log on PC daily nearly as often. Even hard core ex players I have trouble even convincing to play a game cuz it’s a hassle. If it wasn’t a hassle, they would come back.

You must hang out with a very young crowd. I can't imagine anyone of my generation wanting to play a game on a tiny little 5" screen where you can barely see anything, when you can play it on a proper 18" screen or better.

If you define young as 30-40’s then yeah. It’s not about screen size, it’s about convenience. People are on their phone a lot. They like notifications. Even me who prefers to play on my Mac computer w a large screen still spends 75% of my time on CC on my mobile due to convenience.

It’s also helping the decline, almost ALL growth in gaming is on mobile. It’s insanely ridiculous. CC will continue declining until it innovates. If it doesn’t innovate, it’ll go the way of toys r us and others who failed to adapt to a mobile / online industry. (While totally different the premise is the same - failing to adapt)

Gaming and in particular GROWTH within gaming is on mobile. I venture to say if CC did mobile, and did it right, we would be seeing steady growth, not decline.

I guess. I get that it's happening. I just don't get why. I can't comprehend why people would want to strain their eyes to see things on those tiny little screens. Once in a while, if it's a REALLY slow day at work, I'll read a wikipedia article on my work phone. (I won't waste the money for a data plan on my personal phone, but since my employers have already wasted the money, I figure it's no great crime to use it.) That's mostly text, though. If I come across something complicated like a structural diagram, I'll wait until I get home to see it on a real screen.

Anyway, that's just me bitching about the modern world, which I hate. You don't have to answer; I know my incompatibility with the world is largely an irrelevant digression here.

Well I agree w you again, I don’t prefer it. But I enjoy being here and for me it’s a either I’m here on my phone or I’m not here hardly at all. So I’ve made a choice to be here, bcuz I enjoy it.
Not many are willing to put up w current CC on phones. It needs major improvement. And the topic is growth which is why I focused my comments from that perspective not my personal one.

I've actually been thinking about this occasionally of late, as well. CC will require an app to survive period. as someone who loathes taking turns on his phone, I still see the need for it. not sure how many "small" maps CC currently has(doodle, lux, Madrid size) but I think if the app was designed around 15-20 maps of similar size, I think all concerned would be pleased with the results.

I think that would be the worst of all possible worlds. Can you imagine a CC where the bulk of the population is playing shit like Doodle and Lux? While all the really good maps wither on the vine? What happens to tournaments and clans? Do they have to start redesigning events to exclude all the fancy maps? <shudder>

Would you rather the site either on the vine and all maps die? I mean if the majority of games were classic and 1-2 dozen other maps designed for mobile and that’s enough of a skeleton version to bring people here and activate the community again why wouldn’t we do it?

Mobile would bring users, more active forums, NEW users, they could start filling speed games, etc. yes they would be small map but that’s better than looking for speed games and finding none available.

Some would learn there’s “more to the game then the app” and make the conversion but the first step is getting people here

yeah, I would tend to think the app would "get people in the door", duk. I would think there would be some app folks who liked the game enough to play the larger(and yes, better) maps @ home or at work on their pc's...

Yep, a well designed UI app w 1-2 dozen correctly sized maps in the app that uses the same community / game engine here could go a long way. IMO it’s what the foundry should be focused on now so there’s potential for this in the future

that little map of Paris that's been layin around the foundry would be an excellent place to start.

...I just had an excellent idea! CC could use that foundry place to make and release... new maps!!!

I will happily design/develop new map(s) for mobile... some maps could also be re-jigged to work better on mobile: i.e. no gameplay changes, but the map graphic would suit mobile better (portrait in orientation, less hectic and overall simpler in aesthetic).

However, the real answers are:
  • an app
  • more involvement from management: there's no point in any of us developing maps or ideas for site growth if nothing will be implemented

Usually here is the other way around. Community shows involvement and works toward a goal and gets the support. If nobody shows interest it probably won’t go anywhere.

So developing maps that have the added benefit of being mobile friendly could be later catagorized as that and used on the site as is, until that point. But without the maps I’m doubtful it would happen

I agree with your point when we’re talking about maps, but an app? The community can’t really come together and create an app or a responsive mobile site... or can they? I would happily design visuals for a CC app, for free, however i don’t have programming skills.

I think the point I’m trying to make is this: we have a community creating maps, organising tournaments – things that make CC customers happy - and talking about business ideas like apps, but there isn’t any encouragement from the management or feedback/discourse. If we had that, we could do more.

The owner automatically deducting renewal costs is also a point of contention. That really pisses a lot of people off. It also says wham is only in it for the money, not the game, not the community.

well, i would put the banning of Thorthoth (which i don't believe is necessary), far below the need to ban anyone that posts child porn openly within the forums.-Bj

Sure, I feel you. I don't really care what motivates them. But the money will stop coming if they don't develop their business. They might not want to invest their finances into growing the website as there is no guaranteed return. But that's business (and the game). It's risky.
