Pb with search

Does someone know why search seems to be broken ?

For example recently I wanted to find the Championship topic because a new member asked me what it was.

I used advanced search in completed tournament with keyword "Championship" and seach engine gave me "No suitable matches were found."

I then went to the beta site where search works, and found back the topic.

The topic is indeed here on the real site : viewtopic.php?f=792&t=201425

But I can't find it using search.

Why ?

Also is it just me, i.e, does it work for you ?

The search function was always garbage, and now it's worse.

No, it's not just you.

The option to select a specific directory never worked in my experience, and I have been here many years.

Things got worse after the great forum deletion/restoration. None of the restored topics are indexed.

The tournament search in Game Finder does work, so since the Championships were tournaments you should be able to find them through Game Finder. For other topics, I use other workarounds, but that should be enough for a tournament thread. DoomYoshi used to get his forum feed through RSS, so older threads he can usually find for you in his RSS index if you ask him nicely. Some people use Google or WaybackMachine (if you remember the date).

But in general, the phBB Search function was always a crippled piece of garbage, and it has only gotten worse since the great deletion.

Between the Beta search and the site search almost everything is indexed. You're just missing a couple years of indexing.

I never ever found any good answers from the search tool. Most of the time it's the same : no suitable answers / OR / a lot of answers with nothing to do with the subject asked.
I stopped using it a while ago.
It needs to be totally rebuild. That's my thought!

Then explain to me how I can create a thread, type the exact name of the thread into the search window, and have it come up "no results found"?

If you remember the date that you posted it, you could try tracking it down in your posting history. The search function got trounced when the forums had a deletion/cleanup and a reset.

Oh, I know. I do a lot of searching manually on this site, by guessing the date and then going through the forums manually from that date forward.

I don't know, give me an example.

First, you're probably using search wrong. There are two searches. One is in the top left. That one is to be avoided at all costs. Using it amounts to being nominated for a Darwin award. On the top right is the Advanced Search. If you use that one, it works pretty effectively. Make sure you click "Display results as topics" or you end up with the basic search, which is an affront to decent people everywhere. It actually does work pretty good. If you know that you are looking for a thread title, you can check "Topic Titles Only".

star wars contest - chewie edition

That's a tournament DJENRE is currently recruiting for. Typed that actual name into search, "no results found".

StarWars is one word in the OP. StarWars =/= either Star or Wars. If you select "Search for any terms" you will get a ton of results. Usual searching rules still apply - don't search for common words like edition or contest.

So if you set the search to titles only, you end up with 10 results and his tournament is the second. If you fail to set that option, you will notice there is a whole page of results, just ctrl-f "chewie" which is the "rarest" word and you will come across his tournament in the 2 of 2 instances of chewie (the search term being first).

I know this seems archaic in the world of intelligent Google searches. Keep in mind, the Vatican digital library (the one with all the original manuscripts from around the world) uses the exact same type of search engine. Just pretend you're searching for one of the few remaining Aztec ritual books called StarWars.

Well I tried to create a tournament around Star Wars, and because of a strange discussion about a search tool, It became an Aztec Ritual Book.

What would be the best Aztec map on CC for my tourney then? :D

Also, one more proof that SEARCH TOOL is pretty hard to use properly.
It's about the COOKIE JAR CHALLENGE

I thought at least "NEXT" was in the thread title. So I used the search tool.
1/WHO'S NEXT (NEXT was the only word left after the search / 'who' and 's' are eliminated).
2/then NEXT+ topic titles only.
3/also tried to change the "Display results as".
No good answer was given!

I've finally found that clue on my own. Better than the search tool. :ugeek: Because of my green sunglasses! :D

And you now what? NEXT IS TOTALLY IN THE TITLE!!!!!
I won't give the link right now because it's still running for the cookie jar challenge. I'll post it later.

Then I tried :
1/ to copy the thread title, and to paste it into the search tool, It never gives me the correct thread. :o
2/ even with or without "topic titles only" or "display results as"

SEARCH TOOL JUST SUCK! :?

As already mentioned, it doesn't work on older threads, only on ones created since July and a variety of other ones.
