Primary Motivation at CC (and a question)

Postby KoolBak on Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:32 am

OK..will try not to write a book here.

I have been at CC almost since its inception...was one of the first to buy premium when it came avail....I LOVE this site; it is my only online diversion as that is not typically my style.

Anyhow, I recently have had "issues" with a doubles partner that prompted this poll....what PRIMARILY motivates you here at CC? I love playing singles with friends / fun people; I enjoy the banter as much or more than the game itself.

I have played approx 95% of my 700 games as singles, mainly against better players. I am not THAT concerned about my rank but of course I would like it to improve.

I met a guy that invited me to join some doubles games; it turns out he has ONLY played doubs in public games and his ONLY concern is rank. He apparently has NEVER played a singles game on pupose / for fun...now I am NOT saying this is wrong, it is just completely at the opposite end of the spectrum from me.

Anyhow I joined a few games; he directed me and we handily won (maybe 10 pts per game). He started up 20 or 30 more and I joined around a dozen, thinking "Hey, this is easy money!". Well I have become disallusioned as they are boring and now we are fihghting....in one game, he gave direction, which I followed but did nothing else. Next time he calls me a dissappointing buffoon (essentially) for not doing a bunch of other BS he did not tell me to. Then, in another game, he goes off in a similar manner - I am not one to take this kind of CARP, I reciprocated in hillbilly fashion...I await his responses.

Was I wrong? Sorry for the length...wanted to get it off my chest - actually lost sleep over this! How pathetic is that? Thanks-

wow, i have to agree with you KoolBak, and don't lose sleep over it, some people are just dishonorable douchebags, and you can't let those people get to you, because you are better than them.

hi

Postby trestain on Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:57 am

well this game is for fun i wouldn't be playing it every day otherwise. But i like to keep my rank high i consider it a challenge to get as high as possible.

although check my games i do not play many doubles either, i just prefer singles and will not be deliberately using any kind of trick just to get me higher up on the scoreboard.

peace out

The game has to be for fun. I think it's sad to only care about rank - it's only a game afterall. Sure we all started playing on this site without any idea about ranks or anything. I love the game but I couldn't care less that I'm not the world's greatest ever player.

The trouble that I've discovered with this site - is that when you get into the upper reachs of the scoreboard, the importance of points have taken over my desire to play and enjoy.

Don't get me wrong. I still love playing risk, but maintaining a top 30 position has become a primary objective.

I tend to play about 80% doubles games now with the other 20% being 6 player standard Elite games.

I tend to win about 75% of my doubles games (6 player type) which keeps my score consistent, and the standard games tend to even out a 1 in 6 win rate.

I have been guilty of giving one of my doubles mates a rolicking during a game where he made a shit placement / move (and i felt bad after doing so) but as I said - staying high in the leaderboard means you can't afford to loose many games.
I don't know where your team mate is in the Leaderboard KB

Pedro - thanks for the post - I understand your position. I dont want to lambaste the guy but he is very high in ranking (also in the elite tourney I believe) - he has told me he will not play singles as they are too volatile for his rank. The 1 in 6 sounds about right for me as well which makes me feel much better.......

well, considering since I got my prem (the first one one the site, w00t for me) I dropped from being ranked 8 to rank 2452...so I dont know if I can even call it "fun" any more :)

If you forget what fun is, then all is lost.

KB, we need another game man, I miss the old days.

Well I just got a long list (on a short piece of paper) from my "partner" outlining what a dick I am...I guess I was expecting it.....an apology or a "let's just get along" would have been much nicer......

I have added this person to my Ignore List so will no longer have to deal with the mental anguish of BS in chat...really too bad.

Should I be a total ass and ruin the games? Cut off my nose to spite my face? hmmmmmmmm A hard thing for me to do.

i wouldn't sabotage my own partner because he pissed me off to the point of putting him on my ignore list, i would finish the games as best I could. It would be the more grown-up thing to do.

LOL @ Huge!

Well Meg...no one has ever accuse me of acting grown up...that will take maybe another 43 years......

I do agree with you however; I shall simply play as best I can and enjoy the silent chat.......

rank is nice but, if all u do is stress about the rankings then where's the fun in playing.

now i def. am doing it for fun & the proof is in my score & rank. I'd love to move up but, it's okay if i don't.

meeting nice people is also great :)
