China still an oppressive. You have no rights

Postby DirtyDishSoap on Fri Nov 17, 2017 9:34 am

In recent news, China still hates it's own people enough to be absolutely soul crushing.

Population of China use to taking a dick up the butt by government officials.

Oh, an article by the India Times?

I mean sure, it is possible that a newspaper based in India (China's regional geopolitical competitor and staunch US ally) has good reasons for publishing anti-China stories based only on unverified anecdotes gathered from a handful of anti-Chinese government campaigners. Then again, it's also possible the paper that drives traffic to its website by sticking cameras down celebrities' cleavage and then slut shaming them rather than apologizing is just a swamp where journalistic integrity goes to die.

Bob Guccione's Penthouse Magazine was basically a soft-core porn outlet. It also happened to be a tireless crusader for the rights of Vietnam Veterans and exposed numerous ways the American government sold out veterans' rights. Being A only proves that one is A. It does not prohibit one from also being B. Lots of publications earn their bread-and-butter appealing to horndogs whilst still doing legitimate and serious reporting on other fronts.

Attacking sources and refusing to discuss content is a Symmetry trick. Surely you're better than that.

Buzzfeed is another great example. Most of their site is clickbait trash, but their investigative reporting unit is really solid.

China still an oppressive.

Lets ask the Americans of Japanese decent of the 40s if americans have rights.
As George Carlin points out, americans have one right, the right to...right this way.

Nobody, anywhere in any nation has "rights", regardless of any piece of paper that says they do, if somebody really believes they do, just put a little research into their justice system. Hell, westerners check the ndaa. lol

These "justice" systems do operate giving people enough to believe they do have some rights.
But after youve moved thru justice systems a time or two, your thinking may change a bit.

People shouldnt confuse a loose framework of rules (laws) we live by as rights, thats 2 dif things.

That "rights" was what the war of independence was about, they called it Liberty and that was/is a scam.

To check that out, a person just needs to understand what liberty is and ask the native and black peoples if they ever saw it.
And that means white protestants never had it either. nobody ever has.

People really dont have rights, a person can get revenge here and there tho.

A neat thing about liberty, once its understood its pretty easy how people can feel its worth dying for.
Sad to think all those that did were just scammed, just as we all are with every war I guess.

Publishing soft porn and arguing for increased support for army soldiers are not contradictory positions. Claiming to be an objective and trustworthy source of information while also peeping on innocent women then trying to make out it's their fault are. The India Times will clearly say and do anything they like if they think it'll get readers - so we can't take them at face value when they say 'we found two random anti-CCP campaigners making unverified claims about the Chinese government - China is evil!'

Buzzfeed published the Trump dossier in full because, according to their editor, it's not the media's job to verify information before they spread it all over the internet. I don't understand how you can trust them as a source of investigative journalism - by the own admission they are pretty much the worst source of factual information out there.

I spend 6 months out of each year in China...

The government is definitely authoritarian and the state run propaganda machine is significant.

The Chinese Government filters all internet content thru its firewall which pretty much blocks most internet content.

Google, Youtube, Netflix, HBO, Facebook, Hulu Instagram, Snapchat etc. are all blocked and forbidden. Forums are blocked and even if you can access news sites from outside of China the firewall blocks all comments.

No Game of Thrones & even shows like Vampire Diaries are forbidden (forbidden is the word that the Chinese people use)

It's even illegal to live with a girlfriend/boyfriend outside of marriage.

Jail/Prison is definitely a place you want to stay away from as there are absolutely zero rights for prisoners. 1st offense for drunk driving (any level of bac) is mandatory 15 days in jail w/o contact to lawyer/ visits/phone calls etc. & drivers license is banned for life.

Major corruption at virtually every level of government. Each province has a select few in power that basically call all of the shots.

Chinese professionals can not get travel visas to visit the US (or any other 1st world country for that matter) unless they own a house/apartment are married & have a child (something that will force them to return) or know a party member that can hook them up. Average everyday rank & file Chinese people have absolutely zero chance of getting a travel visa.

Wages are incredibly low and there is little consideration (for the most part) for worker safety. It's virtually impossible for the average Chinese citizen to gain wealth. Labor is so cheap that the cost of labor doesn't even factor into the cost of the products that are made in China. The rest of the economic world essentially outsources it's slavery to China.

All of that said.. There is an emerging middle class in China that want's the same things that Westerners have and are getting it. China is embracing Western culture in a big way. If you are a professional with a degree, you have a decent chance of making a good salary and having a good life.

China is very safe and the people are accepting and friendly. Ive been all over China, by myself, & I never once felt unsafe of threatened in any way.

That was one questionable decision, sure. (I'll note that they published it admitting it was unverified, which you might think was wrong but is not the same as them endorsing the story without having thoroughly vetted it.) But they have done a lot of other work too, enough to convince me that they are on the whole a pretty solid source of information. For example, in academia they have broken a lot of the major stories about sexual harassment by high level professors, people who might otherwise have gotten away with abusing their students. (They also broke the story about Kevin Spacey.) And they recently published the in-depth story about Breitbart that has gotten a lot of praise.

wow, so when someone says in china a person has no rights, they mean a person has no rights.

Just out of interest, your saying people cant visit somewhere else? no travel visas.

How do all those chinese marriage sites operate? are they all a scam?
or can people leave and just not go back?

My mother visited china about 25 years ago, she thought it was great.
Ive never been.

Can’t be bothered to go through dtf’s whole West is best rant post but a couple of things in particular stand out:

No Game of Thrones & even shows like Vampire Diaries are forbidden (forbidden is the word that the Chinese people use)

lolwat. Not true.

It's even illegal to live with a girlfriend/boyfriend outside of marriage.

Also not true.

Next you’re going to be telling us all about how Kim Jong Un fed his uncle to his dogs.

Don’t pay too much attention to dtf, he has a big time interest in chugging hard liquor.

I have heard of some government officials being blocked from leaving the country - e.g. the dad of an acquaintance of mine does something in government (I’m not sure what, I assume it’s sensitive) and is blocked from leaving the country. Other than that China’s no different to any other country. It’s difficult (but possible) to move really large amounts of money out of the country, but moving yourself out isn’t prohibited at all.

Unless dtf is referring to the fact that countries such as the US, UK etc require tourists from a lot of developing countries (including China) to demonstrate strong ties back in their home country (e.g. property, family) and stump up a huge cash deposit before they’ll even think about giving them a tourist visa. In which case he is correct in saying that countries such as the US make it very difficult for ordinary Chinese to travel there.

Good job :D the important part is getting the tones right. Usually in modern pinyin you’ll see that written as ‘zai jian’. Means ‘meet/see you again’.

Peking is the old spelling of Beijing so yes, I lived there. Never actually been to Shanghai.

The regional accents are a bit less debilitating than French

Postby 2dimes on Sun Nov 19, 2017 6:45 pm

Yeah, it's been tricky but I'm starting to hear some of the tones properly. I can emulate a few of the peculiar ones where it sounds like your trying to talk without losing your sip of tea.
