3 American Heroes in Jan.

----3 American Heroes born a week apart through time in January...----

-----------In January, America and The SOUTH celebrates the birthdays of 3 of it's beloved sons. 1)Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.(Jan.15,1929),2)General Robert E. Lee(Jan.19,1807),and 3)General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson(Jan. 21,1824). It is nice to see these 3 names honored together in our politically correct society.
-----In fact, since Dr.King has achieved almost a righteous realm, while statues ,historical markers and historical references honoring the 2 Generals are desecrated and destroyed across The SOUTH. One wonders what Dr.King, who dreamed of a day when men would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character, would say about such behavior.
-----Dr.King taught us to love, not hate those with who we disagree with. He showed us through peaceful protests and ultimately his death. That "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL",he deserves our HONOR.
-----Similary, decades after the cannons of The War Between the States fell silent. Men and women across The SOUTH(and America)still HONOR the memories of the 2 Generals as well. Today, many leftists denounce those HONORS, through juvenile name calling.
-----It is helpful to consider the character of these 2 Generals. Not through politically correct glasses that labels them as unrepentant racists, much as the left currently labels our President Donald J. Trump. It is the exact opposite. Lee and Jackson endeared themselves to Southerners(and Americans),because they were men of unquestionable character.
-----Despite Jackson's success in both the Mexican/American War and The War Between the States. The accomplishment for which he was most proud of, was the Sunday school class he began in 1855. For free black and slave children in Lexington, VA.. More than 100 children showed up every Sunday, not just to learn THE WORD of GOD, but also to read and write. Many of them became leaders in their communities after blacks were freed.
-----Jackson's effort was no small accomplishment. In the aftermath of the 1831 Turner Rebellion in southeast Virginia. Legislatures in all Southern States enacted restrictive laws including the prohibition of black education. A local Lexington judge warned Jackson his Sunday school was in violation of such laws, and he could face a year in jail if he continued. Jackson was stuborn and responded that black children stood in need of GOD'S salvation as much as white children. He told the judge to follow his conscience, as Jackson would follow his. He refused to close the school. Which continued for many years after his death in 1863.
-----Likewise, Lee endeared himself to Southerners(all Americans)not only through his military greatness , but through his Faith and Honor. He was the only cadet to go through all 4 years at West Point , without receiving a demerit. He, as a Lt. captured a Mexican General and his army , with a small band of men in The Mexican/American War. He was offered command of the entire UNION ARMY, at the beginning of The War Between the States. Lee refused, because he could not fight against his "country", the sovereign State of Virginia.
-----Lee was also a strong Christian who closely aligned his faith in GOD, with his duty as a military officer. Lee once wrote,"DUTY , THEN, IS THE SUBLIMEST WORD IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. YOU SHOULD DO YOUR DUTY IN AL THINGS. YOU CAN NEVER DO MORE. YOU SHOULD NEVER DO LESS." He imprinted many such moral lessons to future leaders of his State as president of Washington College(now Washington and Lee University)after the war.
-----It is no surprise that Southerners(as most Americans)whose fathers and grandfathers fought in The War Between the States. Recognized the moral qualities of these 2 Generals and wanted to hold them as examples for their children and grandchildren(all Americans). If only we all could recognize the content of their character, not the color of their skin,or which side they fought on North or South...WE MIGHT ACHIEVE DR.KING'S DREAM...:):):) ...:)ConfederateSS.out!(The Blue and Silver Rebellion)...:)

How dare you compare Dr. King with 2 traitors who fought and murdered hundreds of thousands of Americans to maintain slavery.

...you may proceed...Now you joked in the other thread...Stonewall was shot by his own men...I think it was an oopsy at night, like Jackson himself as he forgave the soldier...But since, some did not like his Sunday school...One can now think...He gave his life as a martyr for more than people think...Was assassinated like Dr.King...The assassins used War and night time to get away with it...OOH!..something historians can think about....:)ConfederateSS.out!(The Blue and Silver Rebellion)...:)

They weren't traitor's, Bern. The South never tried to overthrow the US government, they simply wanted to secede. If you think that's traitorous then you have to condemn the California attempts at secession, for instance.

Early on it was always assumed that States had the right of secession. It wasn't until 1869 that the SCOTUS ever ruled anything about secession. Before that it was always assumed that States could leave the Union. Even in Texas vs White the SCOTUS though it ruled that States could not unilaterally secede, it did admit that secession was still possible consent of the States and/or through revolution.

Had the South won the Civil war it's secession would have therefor become legal through right of Revolution. The right of revolution is also argued as a natural law. Therefor, to simply claim "they were traitors" when all they were doing was exercising their own natural rights is basically a a cop out at best, disingenuous and most likely, in your case, just simple ignorance.

Bern, You are an ignorant POS. Basically.

Thankfully, Lincoln never viewed the South as traitors. Jefferson Davis was never charged with treason for example. No confederate officer or soldier or politician was ever executed for treason. In fact, the Union by law at the time did not jurisdiction to even charge confederates with treason, though there were a few attempts. Not many, though, and they pretty much went no where.

But what do you care about facts, right Bern?

So, in a nutshell, Lee, Jackson, they weren't traitors. You can try and label them as such, flying in the face of all facts and history, but it doesn't make your view any more true, Bern.

I view your views as not only treasonous and ignorant, but a dog whistle for segregationists.

Too bad Trump was not President back then! He would of hanged the entire Southern Aristocracy.

I'm talking about the soldiers; some being actual children but most barely being above eighteen. The poor go to fight the war, and the young are primarily sacrificed. All in the name of owning people. Same as it ever was.

It was a shitty thing and not to be glorified. Especially those in in gray who would destroy bodies and lives in the name of chattel.

Besides. Shermans tactics were a forefather of the American campaigns in Europe and Japan in the 1940s. We should be greatful for his wartime innovations. Right?

Right?

Thanks! Some of my fondest memories of this site involve the howling lunatics this forum harbors, so I'm not too stressed about it.

And nerds flying confederate colors feels like home to me. Yelling at them just feels like normal conversation these days.

f*ck right on out of here with this shit. The problems encountered by the south as a whole and the deep south in particular have little to do with Sherman scorching through three states (he barely even touched Savannah and that city has some issues), and a lot to do with (1)the collapse of an economy backed entirely by slavery, (2)the time and energy spent to continue repressing that freed population, (3)the disconnect between the south (and the rest of flyover country) and urban economic centers which has led to destructive and poorly thought out policies on the national political stage, and racist and classist sentiments at the cultural boundaries, and, finally, (4)austerity, privatization, and other neoliberal policies at the local levels draining any hope for economic rehabilitation of poorer areas.

In short, Sherman didn't break the south. Just like the rust belt, capitalism is the culprit.
