Two Koreas united by mutual revulsion towards Japan

North and South Korea may still officially be at war, they may have thousands of artillery and missiles pointing at each other across the DMZ. But one thing can unite them like nothing else, a collective desire to beat Japan.

Speaking to the Korea Times, South Korean high-school student Min Seung-won summed up the mood: "I was initially against North Koreans joining our team, but the match against Japan means a lot to us as a nation. I hope the North and South Korean players can come together more unified because of the historical tension, to win the game against Japan."

Yup. they fielded a Unified Korea team. They're getting very chummy with each other these days, despite the shrill commands from Mike Pence that they should stay separated and hate each other.

Love saves the day!

The two sides of Ireland should do the same if they ever face England.

The two sides of Germany should do that if they ever face Russia.

Oh, wait, I think they did.

That's possible, I've never watched rugby.

Yeah, because building bridges and hoping for peace is such a terrible idea.

One can however wonder how far diplomacy with a nation like N-Korea can actually go. What can be accomplished apart from a status quo?

Very little, in the short term. In the long term? A lot.

A war posture is sustained by maintaining an US vs THEM attitude. Discovering that THEM has a lot of the same hopes and fears as US do goes a long way toward breaking down that attitude. Little cultural exchanges did a lot to defuse tensions during the Cold War, and ultimately helped bring about the end. Glastnost and perestroika came from a generation of Russians that had sat on their balconies listening to the Beatles.

Japan and South Korea co-hosted the 2002 football world cup. Nobody cares about the winter olympics.

You left Taiwan out of your East Asia analysis. Was that an accidental oversight or mainland censorship propaganda?
