I would be interested to know if the study also looked at the stress levels of the younger generation, both those living with parents and those living alone.

(Go to Hell, Duk).

It doesn't. There's a link to the paper in the article. Don't pretend you're interested in discussing this in good faith.

Not directly related, but younger people are more likely to suffer from various mental health issues just in general. Not because they have to live with workshy parents though, more because those working on zero hours or Uber-like freelance contracts suffer mentally due to the lack of security, and the younger generation is more likely to work like that:

Parents just cannot understand how stagnant wages, unaffordable healthcare, and being actively hunted by roving police gangs could be holding young people back. It must be something else - like avocado toast or all those participation trophies that we kept giving them when they were children.

Can it. I'm the one discussing this objectively. You're already wearing your whiny prejudices on your sleeve.

What about adults who move back home when their parents are in their mid 70's?

I'm not sure why Thorthoth and neoteny are arguing. They are both kind of right. For much of human history, multi-generational dwellings have been the norm and they are still in many parts of the world, just not the Western world.
It is all about individuality now. If you don't succeed on your own, you're still a failure even though succeeding as a group is a more likely outcome.

It doesn't matter about stagnant jobs or whatever. Jobs aren't a real thing. They are a modern invention.

It's not like there's a job out there waiting for you. People only work jobs so they can buy stuff they don't need. The only reason they are employed is so they can make stuff that other people don't need. The entire economy is a facade and it doesn't really matter if you participate in it. It's not about exploiting market inefficiencies, the entire market is an inefficiency.

It's still common in China, although as Korea developed I know there it became more common for people there to stick their parents in care homes, so that might start happening more in China too (or at least people send money to their parents without actually having them move in).

In China (and probably Korea too) it's also still pretty common for people to live with their parents until they reach their mid/late 20s and move in with their partner. In the UK, I think for my parents' generation it would have been almost shameful for someone to still be living with their parents in their mid 20s (because you'd be expected to be independent by then), whereas these days it's already become pretty normal (if not the norm) for people to live with their parents until their mid/late 20s. In my current and last companies, the staff in their 20s who were originally from London all lived with their parents. Adult parents moving in with their kids is probably the next step - that's avocado toast for you.

When parents are empty-nested they often move to a smaller place. We did. If either of the kids moved back permanently it would cause stress just cos the place is too small.
Before the kids moved out we had a three-story house in NJ with a basement - and the garage was 400 square foot, we used to use it for play rehearsals.
Now we live in a a single story, 3-bedroom place with too much stuff in.
