McCarthy out! Chaos wins!

Postby Pack Rat on Tue Oct 03, 2023 4:48 pm

8 Republican extremists with the help of 210 Democrats ousted McCarthy as Speaker. This was the result of McCarthy lying to President Biden and the Democrats about a prior deal.

Chaos will be the norm, until another Speaker is picked. Good luck in getting Republicans to pick another Speaker without Democrats.

Let the fun start!

I think the Dems made a mistake participating in this. McCarthy just a few days ago took a huge leap of faith and passed a bipartisan spending bill. It was a great opportunity for the Dems to reciprocate and show that bipartisanship can work and be rewarded. Kicking him in the teeth just plunges everyone back to cutthroat partisanship.

Very sad.

McCarthy lied to the prior deal with Ukraine funding to President Biden.

Your word counts on verbal deals.

I'm not trying to say he was a hero.

But he did put together a bipartisan deal when it mattered. Regardless of what came before, they should have seen that as a great leap forward and rewarded it.

The best part is that the Republicans wouldn't let Gates, Goser, and the GOP rebels use their lecterns even to introduce the motion to vacate -- they had to cross to the Democrat side of the chamber, where the Democrats allowed them to use their lecterns.

The magic moment!

The new third-in-line to the presidency then uses all 5'4" of his Beta energy to shut down the session!

It was the result of McCarthy lying to the Republican Right. If he'd shut the government down on Saturday, the motion would never have been introduced.

The new guy will know not to cross this line and to blow-up the government on November 17 like we were promised.

He Lost the Trust of the Democrats and Republicans.

He was a weasel.

Democrats have plenty of reasons not to trust McCarthy.

McCarthy didn’t vote to certify the election on Jan. 6, 2021. The attack on the U.S. Capitol is still raw on Capitol Hill, and Democrats will never forgive McCarthy for voting against certification after the mob was cleared from the building.

McCarthy said former president Donald Trump was responsible for the Jan. 6 riot — and then, a few weeks later, traveled to Mar-a-Lago and took an infamous picture with Trump with their thumbs up. Democrats are still furious about the incident, which helped revive Trump politically and whitewash the severity of his role on Jan. 6.

McCarthy worked against the creation of the Jan. 6 select committee, which Democrats viewed as an attempt to protect Trump.

McCarthy gave the Jan. 6 security footage to since-fired television host Tucker Carlson without releasing it to news outlets.

McCarthy delivered votes for the Cares Act — a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief bill passed in 2020 and signed by Trump — and later became highly critical of pandemic relief legislation.

He worked with Democrats to help put together the microchips manufacturing bill last year and then whipped his party to vote against it.

McCarthy backed out of a spending agreement he made with President Biden as part of a deal to lift the debt limit less than two weeks after Biden signed the law in an attempt to placate the furious conservatives in his conference. Democrats on the House floor on Saturday chanted, “Keep your word!

McCarthy said in August that he would hold a vote on the House floor to open an impeachment inquiry against Biden. In September, on the first day back from summer recess, McCarthy opened an impeachment inquiry and did not hold such a vote.

On Saturday morning, McCarthy didn’t give lawmakers 72 hours to read the short-term spending bill to keep the government open despite House rules. Republicans argued that it was an amendment and not a full bill so the 72-hour rule didn’t apply. But Democrats were given just minutes to read it and vote on it despite asking Republican leadership for more time. (Democrats deployed stalling tactics to get about two hours to read and discuss the bill.)

On Sunday, McCarthy went on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and charged Democrats with wanting a shutdown.

That infuriated Democrats, who voted nearly unanimously for the government spending bill when fewer than half of Republicans did.

“Trust is something that you need here,” Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (D-N.H.) said. “It’s easy to lose. It’s hard to get back.”

It was a result of his repeated lies to both sides.

Democrats could have saved him, but why? He repeated lies to them as well as his fellow Republicans.

They knew. They had to coordinate with the Democrats to get use of the Democratic lecterns as the Republicans barricaded access to their own lecterns to try to prevent the motion from being introduced. After Gaetz finished introducing the motion he plopped down between AOC and the wonderful Ilhan Omar.

Meanwhile, Rep. Nehls has announced he'll nominate DONALD J. TRUMP to be the next Speaker! That would put Trump one heartbeat (Biden) and one botched neck lift (Harris) away from the presidency!

OK McHenry defo wants the job permanently. His first act was to evict Nancy Pelosi from her hideaway office. She has 24 hours to clear out her crap. The base will love this!

I'm hearing alot of bullshit reasons from everyone else here but I 100% agree with you Duk. Dems made a big strategic mistake here, yes hes a liar and can't be trusted... welcome to politics everyone. This is why the Dems can't win long term though, they saw the opposition floundering and instead of cheering it on from the sidelines they allowed themselves to become a momentary ally with the farthest right.

A couple potential worst case scenarios are now 'on the table' for dems which weren't under McCarthy:
- Trump is voted speaker and becomes 3rd in line to presidency. This was circulating in right wing media echo chambers within hours of the news about McCarthy
- The process of naming a speaker is drawn out over weeks, maybe months in an attempt to ensure there is no budget passed/govt shutdown (the freedom caucus gets their Mexican standoff)

'The Center (Right) Cannot Hold' (?) ... & strange bedfellows indeed.

So anyway, if the Speaker isn't an elected rep, does he still vote or does he just sit there?

Trump is not ruling out taking control of the House of Representatives on a temporary basis while it sorts itself out!

“A lot of people have been calling me about speaker,” Trump said Wednesday morning. “All I can say is we will do whatever is best for the country and the Republican Party.”

Trump’s name was immediately floated by supporters after the successful vote to depose McCarthy, and a Trump adviser Tuesday night told NBC News that Republican members of the House had already been asking Trump to serve as an interim speaker.

“Members are trying to talk to the President about leading as the House works it out long term,” the adviser said in an email.

Last night on Fox News' Sean Hannity show, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan tried to avoid questions about Trump becoming an “interim” speaker by repeatedly saying he wanted him to again become president. Hannity kept pressing the point, and Jordan eventually said he wants Trump “at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue but if he wants to be speaker, that’s fine too.”

Could Trump be elected President and then simultaneously also serve as Speaker? And could he also have his Vice-President resign and appoint himself as Vice-President? That way he would be President, President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House simultaneously. And if Roberts left, he could also appoint himself Chief Justice.

uh, because the house is controlled by the republicans. There is nothing on the lawbooks stating the house leader has to be a member of the house so i think we could even get Joe Exotic - 'The Tiger King' if thats the direction a majority of house Republicans decide is best for the country.

All of this discounts the fact that the freedom caucus doesn't want to govern. It's literally the platform, get elected, sabotage everything, blame everyone else for ineffective leadership and bloated gov't.

Matt Gaetz also needed the speaker to change, McCarthy wasn't shielding him from being investigated for having sex with a 17 year old and then paying her to travel across state lines with him. That's why you keep reading about it being 'personal'.

That is the dream of fascists, communists and anarchists. Destroy or subvert the political system from within. Ruin the economy by making the monetary system to default. Blame the military, social safety net (caters the lazy and criminality of the minorities and refugees), the mainstream media and other tactics.

A ruined economy with tens of millions unemployed could bring a dictatorship with one party rule. MAGA will lead the way!
