Why are only Englishers named Ollie?

Postby saxitoxin on Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:59 am

Anytime I hear someone is named Ollie, I immediately know I'm dealing with an Englishman.

I believe it's short for Oliver.

I knew a girl called Ollie once - she was from Malta. I guess it was short for Olivia.

Hmm, I had always assumed that the name 'Oliver had something to do with Olives.
Maybe like being an olive farmer in ancient times, or being a V.I.P. annointed with sacred olive oil, something like that.

But look at what the Internet just told me:
From Olivier, an Old French form of the Germanic name Alfher (literally "elf army/warrior")

Elf Army! How cool geeky is that!?

Every Otto I've known was Germanic....

I think there's something to this....
"Gypsy told my fortune...she said that nothin showed...."

Neil Young....Like An Inca

Oliver North wasn't English, he was American.
However he was a traitor, so that probably still counts.

Show some respect!

He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United states Elf Army.
He served under General Claus, alongside the Keeblers and that LegosĀ® guy.

Wow, look at that weasel-faced wheelchair-pusher.
You know he only took that job to pilfer jewelry & meds, plus maybe fish out some half-remembered passwords and credit card numbers.
