There are not enough desolate, very cold, isolated islands in Alaska or even the entire USA, for such a "solution" to crime in America. The USA does have too many criminals locked up; we do need to lock up the serious violent criminal. I suspect that many criminals are locked up due to drug and substance abuse and addiction, and lock up without reasonably serious addiction help is relatively ineffective.
This was not where I was planning to go with this post, but let's bring in facts, and not just my opinions.
It's estimated that up to 65% of the U.S. prison population has an active substance use disorder.
When these inmates are released, studies have shown that many will return to using and be arrested again within a few years.
