This is a major question and potential issue; I see two options:

1) Let insurance companies be the MAIN insurer, where profit is a key motive**; OR

2) TOTAL government pays all. Then we get rationed medical care and MORE DEBT added to the Federal Budget. Or so I have been told.

**With the profit as the main motive, we get situations where people in NEED of care are denied coverage and/or payment for medical procedure. This is basically where we are in the US today.

I doubt there is a perfect solution here.

I want to hear from those in UK (and perhaps Canada) about their system of Government pays ALL (except for the very wealthy who hire their own doctors). While in London a few years ago, I experienced medical care first hand and found it FINE. I only paid the cab fare BACK from the hospital. The hotel paid my way there and offered to pay for the return fare; I told them I need to pay for SOMETHING as the good medical care was FINE and allowed me to heal (allergy attack). Also, while in London, at a pub, I met man whose wife is in a care facility for elder patients and the Government covered the costs (all or most; I think it covered all). He explained the 3-4 tiers and the amount one pays depends on which income level one is in. I cannot recall if the top level as within the system or the very wealthy. I think everyone pays into the system, and having a private doctor is an additional expense.

[btw: The doctor who treated me was Indian (or Pakistani) descent. The Nurse was Pakistani, as I recall. I think all the cab drivers I met were of foreign origin, within 1-2 generations. Our hotel was a 4 star in the Kensington area of London (as was the pub), near an area with lots of Muslims. Most of the shops in that area were foreign; mostly Morocco and Syria, as I recall. London is certainly a cosmopolitan city. So, yes, I appreciate legal immigrants who contribute much to the society. At my church we have many of foreign origin in the medical and techical fields.]

I HEAR via reports, mostly from those OPPOSED to Government pays all, that there is rationing in the UK (and other such nations). I also hear the UK system is nearly bankrupt. Can anyone confirm either? preferably by someone in the UK?

And what does Canada do? I think it is a government pays system, but I have not Googled it. Duk? other Canadians? what say you?

To Rephrase this

1) Let individuals carry massive amount of medical debt personally (or they can choose to die/be in constant pain), let private companies decide what procedures are necessary and should be covered rather than doctors, let private companies set rates and let them charge different rates based on who is the insurer, and charge higher rates to people who don't have insurance. High deductables, high monthly payments, impossible choices for the lower middle class, easy choices for the poorest who don't pay anything.

2) Have the Gov't carry more debt or have significant increase in taxes (still lower than your currently monthly premiums), allow them to set price controls limiting the waste (aka profit to insurers), have doctors decide what is medically necessary. Would still allow for a secondary private coverage market for the wealthy to 'skip the lines' by paying out of pocket. Newer unproven treatments, best in world medical devices, ect... likely not paid for by the 'global' gov't coverage (may still be available privately)

Maybe we can have tarrifs pay for it? That seems to be the answer to everything with the upcoming administration.

This is only secondhand information but my relatives in the UK -- who do not live in London -- have nothing but horror stories about the NHS, like waiting 8-9 months to see a specialist.

The "government" should purchase everyone a private catastrophic care policy which would be issued by social security number so everyone has one whether they take action or not. People are responsible for 100% of the first $6,000 of medical expenses and their catastrophic policies for 100% of everything over $6,000. (Only 10% of the U.S. public access more than $6,000 in healthcare in any single year to begin with.)

This plan would eliminate life-crippling medical debt while preserving the efficiency of private healthcare.

This was actually the leading proposal on the left pre-Obamacare. Obama, however, had to cobble together a plan that would appeal to companies like UnitedHealthcare, which was one of his largest campaign donors. Ergo, he devised the insanely complex Obamacare with its insurance mandate, which was a boon for managed care companies like UnitedHealthcare since it forced everyone -- under the power of the state -- to become a customer of a profitmaking company whether they wanted to or not.
