What is the Weather outside your Window?

Let's discuss something NOT so controversial. What is the Weather outside your Window? Normal or not. Anything crazy going on, like lots of power outages? (None here, that I am aware of, so far.)

We currently have snow, rain, sleet, and freezing rain (the worst) in central Virginia. Schools and much more are closed in the area. That means a day off for me. I enjoyed today doing stuff on CC, mostly working on two Tournaments for my Clan. I went out this morning just as the snow began and our roads have been pre-treated with a brine solution to have salts on the roads before the snow falls. That works really well, as evidenced by earlier snow fall and us driving in some rural roads in the area. Going to the Post Office, a public works truck was spreading salt and sand and my car got a bit sprayed on it as I drove by in the opposite direction. I think this is our third major storm this winter to drop frozen precipitation. We have had almost none the past few winters. And in January, our Temps got down to near single digits Fahrenheit (below -13 Celsius) which is very cold for us in Richmond, VA. (We may have had snow a 4th time, but it was not much and on Fri-Sat so did not affect schools in the area.)

Was the Groundhog right? Six more weeks of winter? So far, some 9 days later, winter still going here in the Eastern USA.

Hot or really HOT Down Under? Snow and Ice in Canada? What about where you are?

We have a relatively calm day today. Temperature actually got above zero for a couple hours in the afternoon.

For tomorrow night, however we have snow and freezing rain in the forecast, and then a heavy dumping in the forecast for Saturday.

We got a mix of everything (snow, rain, sleet, and freezing rain) in the Central VA/Richmond area in the past 24 hours. Freezing Rain is the worst and leads to lots of down power lines and trees. I am surprised the total currently without electrical power is not higher.

Over 1,800 homes and businesses without power in Central Virginia

https://www.wric.com/news/local-news/henrico-county/over-360-homes-without-power-in-henrico-county/

EDIT @ 0807 CCT: {I think that 33k was overnight, after the storm came in, and 1,800 are now still out; I am NOT sure, however.}

Now I read
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Over 33,000 homes and businesses are without power throughout Central Virginia Wednesday morning.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/realestate/over-33-000-homes-businesses-without-power-in-central-virginia/ar-AA1yTE3v?ocid=winp2fptaskbar&cvid=8ec526b4399f42ffbe82a1aed2581f5b&ei=20

ANYWAY:
Some areas got 5+ inches of snow and the further south you go, the more rain (and obviously less snow). I think that the Washington DC area got at least 5 inches of snow. Unlike our Northern friends, we do not do well with snow and driving in "these here parts" and people are encouraged to stay off the roads and stay home; schools close, too, as well as some businesses and other government agencies.

So far, I think we have had 6 days so far since the start of January where schools were closed. We also have days where school open late (2 hours, usually) to allow the sun to melt ice off the roads.

I think Duk works to keep roads clear & passable in Ontario, right? I am sure he stays busy for much of the winter.

Today, in Central to Southeast Virginia, we are expecting 4-12 inches of snow. It is coming down NOW and is light and powdery. Our other snow falls starting in early January have been wetter with bigger flakes; some was mixed with sleet. I expect schools in the area to be closed the rest of this week.

Stay SAFE everyone.

You must be in central-north West Cali...

Not Oregon or further north!

It's now dark and rainy. Type of day I don't even want to look outside.

I feel English

I went outside a little earlier today to clean the snow from my cars and driveway. I estimated only 3-5 inches of snow, less than the forecast of most weather folks in the area media and online (6-12). To be fair, we were near the border of that forecast for snowfall totals. It is a powdery snow and that was a correct forecast. Temps will stay below 32 F (zero C) all day today.

Will schools be open tomorrow? And what about MY School? Gotta wait for that decision.

Today, high near 70F (21.1C). I went on a bicycle ride today. I was too busy to go yesterday when it was a bit cooler here in Central VA.

Three degrees today, with light rain.

Second consecutive day above zero. The snowbanks are getting noticeably smaller.

More importantly, second consecutive day without any winter operations. I was able to sit in my office and catch up on paperwork. Up-to-date now, literally for only the first time since the New Year.

The last 4 days have been black, windy, downpouring and overall horrible.

Beautiful clear blue sky, sunny and 60s now.

Typical Pacific NW / Oregon weather

Sounds like Virginia's weather, DDS. If you do not like today's weather, wait a day or so and it will change, and often, dramatically.

BTW: Here in VA, it feels these past few days that Spring is just around the corner. And that is a welcome change from the past 6 weeks.

Yesterday the weather was GREAT. Sunshine and high Temperatures in the 70s F (low 20s C).

It was a great day as I took some 20 students to a local Zoo. Students had FUN and enjoyed seeing so many animals. The Zoo does a great job taking care of its animals, including penguins and a very young baby Pygmy Hippopotamus.
I saw Lions and Tiger (one); and bears**.

**I do not recall seeing any bears there, but the Zoo "does feature Asian black bears."

I had a girlfriend from West Virginia and drove to see her a few times. :D Lots of snowy roads, especially in January (her birthday). She lived in an area near Charleston, a bit to the east. It was a Long Drive to get there from Blacksburg; I travelled usually from VA TECH in Blacksburg, VA (a bit west of I-81, west of Roanoke, VA).

Lots of Mountains and windy Roads. Beautiful if that is your thing. Lots of Coal Mines and small towns. Typical WVa Community: Creek, Railroad, main Road (ALL running in parallel) and town where there is flat land.

Of course there are a few interstates through the state. I also drove from VA along I-64 to southern WVA into Kentucky in 1998; married by then and NOT to the same young lady.

Lots of good and proud people in West (BY GOD...!) Virginia. I assume that You know that West Virginia became a state in 1863 or so due to the American Civil War. Until then, it was part of VA. Even today, WESTERN VA is often split CLOSE between Democrats and Republicans.

Lots of Scotch-Irish who travelled down from PA in 1700s to 1800s, from what I know. Many speak with a distinct dialect in WVA.

You can look at Tourism for more info.

I have NOT been there, but the New River Gorge Bridge is very spectacular. You know, I-64 may cross there, but I cannot recall as I drove and did not get to look much at the surrounding scenery...NO, it is east of I-64, on Route 19, I think. I heard that They close traffic for one day on bridge for folks to bungee jump from the Bridge. NOT for me...LoL (two photos below)

btw: I went to Montana, West Yellowstone to stay 2 nights while my wife and I visited Yellowstone NP. Amazing scenery at Yellowstone. Great to see that Southern Part of Montana so I can say I was THERE..!, in that state. Big Sky country FOR SURE.

btw2: VA has Mountains, Beaches, and LOTS of History (American Revolution and Civil War, lots of Battlefields). See Yorktown, Monticello, and Wash. DC if you have time to visit here. Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway are scenic roads; not for quick travel; 35 mph max in big stretches. Appalachian Trail goes through Western VA, if that is your thing (Hiking). Of course there are museums (many in Richmond, VA) and more.

I hope that helps, a bit, KB.

BACK to WVA: two photos posted to given you a sense of WVA:

Cool. The redneck / hill people community appeals to me and property prices seem reasonable.

Oregon, despite being 95 percent forest, high desert and farming, is RUN by Portland. Makes the whole state its bitch. Just passed some absolutely tragic liberal gun laws that literally only hurt the law abiding folk...heartbreaking.

Anyhow....thanks for the post!

You are welcome, KB. Are you thinking about moving? I was thinking you wanted to simply visit.

West Virginia tends to be conservative overall. Recall the votes in the Senate of Sen. Joe Manchin.
Manchin represented the most Republican-leaning constituency of any Democrat or independent in Congress during his tenure

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Manchin

Sen. Robert Byrd managed to get lots of Federal jobs and money put into his state while he was a high ranking Senator. West Virginia economics is still heavily dependent on coal.

The Liberal-Conservative split is apparent in VA too. The Liberal areas of Northern VA (Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington) has many people, and many Federal Government workers and contractors, too. Their numbers often overcome the voters in the Rest of the state. The Richmond suburbs, too, have become more Liberal and so that combination overwhelms the conservatives in most of the rest of the State. Our Legislature is split like 21-19 State Senate and 51-49 House. (I am not absolutely sure of those numbers, but I know it is very close. CONFIRMED via online search, btw) One year, around 10 years ago, the control of one House came down to a coin flip, as I recall. The entire state has become like Western VA, very close split between Liberal vs. Conservative.

btw: I met a Liberal woman from Portland, OR, at the University of Notre Dame at our Hotel before the VT vs Notre Dame Football game in 2017 or 2018. There were no empty tables at the breakfast area, and I KNEW she was Liberal before I sat down at her table (her dress and appearance were typical of one). I avoided most political discussion, until near the end of our meal. She was definitely a Portland Liberal.

I have met many former WVA residents in our area as they move out of state to find job opportunities. It reminds me of the Irish.
