Because in 1904 a British guy named Makinder wrote this article: https://www.iwp.edu/docLib/20131016_Mac ... ournal.pdf.
He said there was a "World Island" composed of Europe and Asia where all of the world's resources and industry were concentrated. Whichever nation could control the World Island would control the world.
But to control the World Island you needed to control the pivot area ... a bridge that connected Europe to Asia (in other words, the boundaries of the Russian Empire).
Russia controls the pivot area and, unless it is contained on all sides, will ipso facto end-up controlling the world island and, therefore, the world.
The Makinder article went mostly unnoticed everywhere except in Washington, D.C. where it was read by someone here at the War and Navy Building.
The U.S. didn't want to control the world, but its security was based on the idea of everyone else constantly fighting each other so no one would ever be strong enough to attack the U.S. If there was a world superpower then there would be peace and if there were peace the U.S. could be threatened with attack.
Since then, America's only goal has been to prevent Russia from taking control of the world island. The old empires like France and Britain were able to do this themselves without the U.S. spending its money on the matter, however, as they crumbled away, the U.S. had to take over the operation.
Makinder's theory has mostly been debunked and discarded around the entire world except in Washington where it has been, and continues to be, the underlying strategy for the last 114 years.

The Russian Empire is essentially the successor state to the Golden Horde and its parent, the Mongol Empire. (Don't be distracted by the European origins of some Russian nobility. Overall, the nation is and has always been more Asiatic than European, in its military tactics, its core economics, its demographics, and its basic philosophy.) As the great Central Asian power, it has for 1000 years had the same essential problem -- despite being the world's greatest land power, it is not good at projecting power because of its tenuous connections to the sea lanes and its poor naval potential.
The American Empire is essentially the successor state to the British Empire. It has the exact opposite problem from the Mongols. As a maritime empire, it's great at projecting power over the sea lanes, but when campaigns start to move inland they become exponentially more expensive, and any sustained presence more than 50 miles inland from a seaport soon starts to threaten the survival of the motherland, just from a purely economic viewpoint, regardless of military considerations.
So there they sit, the ruler of land and the ruler of the sea, each deeply jealous of the other's advantages, each grateful for the other's limitations and terrified that the other might overcome those limitations and start knocking.

No, it isn't. The russians might've been so 500 years ago, but that stopped a long time ago. The Russians are the heirs of the Grand duchy of Muscovy. The horde and all types of Tatars were brutally submitted into serfdom or even annihilated for centuries afterward. Their constant marriages with european monarchs, their alliances and trade relations, their zealous fidelity to christianity, they always focused on europe until they gradually became more european.
Anyway, though the American-Russian tensions were geopolitical in origin, I'm not sure that's still the case. Russia barely holds any influence in east-asia, Russian-Afghan aspirations are long gone, and in europe the Russians are basically already defeated. Too many people hate them now and they are technologically and economically too backward to hold much sway. Their only bothersome influence is Iran.
The Russians are being destroyed by time itself. They are lagging behind more and more. Decades ago they were far ahead of everyone else in space engineering; now europe, China and even India have caught up and are leaving the Russians behind. The Russians are paying the price for a lack of modern industry, and the longer they wait to reform they the less important they'll grow.
By now, there is no actual reason anymore for the Americans to feel threatened by the Russians. Putin is just inflaming his domestic nationalism and military pride with foreign interventions. He is desperate to hold onto power, and therefor desperate to offer his people with political distractions.
