Trump's inauguration gave new hope to Nutty Yahoo and encouraged him to abrogate the ceasefire. Essentially, Trump has needlessly prolonged the war by 10 months and now he's taking credit for ending it.

Nutty Yahoo's bombing raids on Iran and Qatar were similarly brought about with Trump's private encouragement. In fact, the U.S. actively participated in the attacks on Iran.

But in actual fact, the majority of deportees have only trivial offenses on their record. Many have simply overstayed their visa or made some technical error on their application. Some have traffic offenses. Only a minority have any kind of criminal record, and even in that group, the majority have ridiculous things like simple shoplifting arrests 20 years ago.

And of course, since ICE focuses on raiding workplaces, the overwhelming majority are people have been living productive lives at present, even if they had some minor tangle with the law years ago.

On this point you can rest assured that it's not hyperbole. Yes, Carney is kissing Trump's ass regularly and will eventually come away with some kind of a deal. And of course, before that we had NAFTA, which Trump tore up for no reason and replaced with USMCA, which he then basically tried to tear up during his second term.

Much deeper. Canada and the U.S. have been staunch allies through two World Wars, Korea, Afghanistan, and minor conflicts in between. Canada was the only nation outside of the U.S. that had laboratories involved in the Manhattan Project. We've been partners in Norad and Nato and Nasa and numerous other agencies. A major part of those agreements has been the free flow of Canadian steel and aluminum to America's defense industries. Canadian steel rode in American battleships, Canadian aluminum flew in American jets, Canadian uranium was packed into American Titan missiles. After 112 years of Canadian resources helping to power America's defense industry, for Trump to spit on this alliance, try to bankrupt the Canadian steel and aluminum industries, and use "national security" as an excuse, is a really, really deep insult. I think if he was honest and said, "I want to destroy Canada because I'm a bully and they're small enough to push around" the backlash would have been less. But suggesting that your most faithful ally through two world wars and the Cold War was suddenly a threat has made him universally hated. It's not just the economic damage done, it's the deliberate insult.

Canadian steel and aluminum are built around American clients, and have been since 1914. They cannot be readily disentangled. When he first launched the steel and aluminum tariff at 25% in February, their profits were hurt but they rolled with the punch and managed to keep most of their customers. But he wasn't satisfied, so in June he doubled them to 50%, and soon the job losses began. They will be saved, most likely through taxpayer subsidies. Even if the tariffs were miraculously lifted today, the damage has been done.

And like I said, it's not just the economic damage, it's the insulting imputations. I don't think most people in the U.S. realize just how much public opinion has really shifted. I've lived in this country 57 years and I've never seen a groundswell of anger like this. People spend hours in the grocery store reading labels to make sure they're not buying American products. People who have wintered in Florida for decades aren't going this year. Some have sold their Florida condos, sometimes at a loss, just to get out. "Energy" prices being down is misleading. Oil prices are down this year, but electricity prices are up. Oil prices cycle up and down constantly, so nothing dramatic there, but electricity prices have generally been less cyclical, so the rise is probably a little more alarming than the up-and-down of oil.
