May Monthly Challenge Blind Companion Tournament - Winner Pi

Postby Caymanmew on Tue Apr 21, 2020 7:51 am

Winner = Pirlo

Signups end April 28th

Hey folks,

This is a blind Companion Tournament for the May Monthly Challenge. That means you will be signing up without knowledge of the map. It will be played on one of the necessary game types (maps and settings) to get one of the May Challenge tokens.

I am looking for 16 players to play 15 games over the month of May. Games will be sent in sets of 3 games once a week.

Schedule
May 1st - 3 games
May 8th - 3 games
May 15th - 3 games
May 22nd - 3 games
May 29th - 3 games

Settings
Map: Standard, Large (80-120 territories)
Players Per Game: 2
Game Type: Polymorphic 4
Initial Troops: Automatic
Play Order: Sequential
Spoils: No Spoils
Reinforcements: Parachute
FOG: Yes
TRENCH: No
Round Limit: 20
Round Length: 24 Hours

Each player will play each other player once. Whoever has the best record over 15 game wins. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker game will be played to determine the tournament winner. In the event of a multiplayer tie, a random single-elimination best of 1 bracket will be set to break the tie. Tiebreaker games will not be played in May and therefore not count towards the May Challange scoreboard.

RULES
- If you quit the tournament you are not eligible to get a medal for the May Monthly Challange.
- Mods can not join as they have the access to see what the map is.

Signups end April 28th

Myself, Mad777, Benga, and Groovysmurf have discussed and decided that mods will not be allowed to join this.

The discussion was brought up after the tournament was posted so it was not originally in the OP.

The reason for this is mods have access to the info on what the map is. Knowing the map gives an unfair advantage in signing up and therefore we feel it is not fair to allow them to enter.

Sorry to Shoop and all other mods.

You say that it will be poly(4) fog no trench no spoils. But then you also say :
It will be played on one of the necessary game types (maps and settings) to get one of the May Challenge tokens.

Are you sure poly(4) will be available ?
In if it's a yes :)

I'm one of the folks who help plan the monthly challenges so I got all the inside info. ;)

May Monthly challenge is planned and ready to go. The map and settings for this tournament fits one of the tokens for the challenge.

Ok, I understand that the slight advantage that a mod might have, but what about the huge disadvantage for the monthly challenge if you are a mod. Sometimes its hard to get pickup games and here 16 players will have a possible 15 game head start.

If the challenge is already finalized, why not just post it (locked until it starts) then allow anyone to join?

I'll probably join either way, but would it be possible to know beforehand whether the scoring for this challenge is going to be based on win% or no. of wins?

This is something we're just testing at this point and the mod issue hadn't really come up. I didn't even realize that people outside the community team and chatters could view that stuff. For the future, we can perhaps keep the map hidden so there is no disadvantage to mods or regular members.

We could also do this. I think my main concern here would be people not reading completely and starting games early and then complaining they aren't getting tokens. Also, we thought it would add an element of fun to have the map unknown and these companion tourneys to be "blind".

It will not be based on win % this month, but number of wins.
