Re: Tea Party Democrats

Did you know that the Democrats had control of both the House and Senate and also the presidency up until November 2010, and yet they did nothing to increase revenue or decrease spending?

Fascinating.

Wait....how does this excuse taking the debt-ceiling hostage?

Why do people still gobble ...

Re: Norwegian Prison System

Found it!

Crimes Per Capita, Norway: 71.9 per 1,000 people
Crimes Per Capita, Turkey : 4.11252 per 1,000 people
http://www.nationmaster.com/compare/Norway/Turkey/Crime

Therefore, based on the prevailing logic in this thread, Norway would see a 15x lower crime rate if they replaced their ...

Re: Norwegian Prison System

It's an experiment, so see if it works. That said, I don't believe it could be replicated here in the US. Honestly, I would not want them to even try that here.

Why not? Aside from political realities making sure it never happens is there any reason that a system like this can not be ...

I think it's disgusting. Prisoners should suffer and be beaten daily because I care more about my animalistic notions of petty revenge than about things like justice or humanity.

Screw your morality, I'm going for all-caps rage posts.

Re: Tea Party Democrats

Instead of supporting a strong government that retains its monopoly in providing certain goods, why not break up the monopoly and end the corporate influence of a few select corporations ?

What makes you think these (probably very rich) corporations wouldn't have more influence when all the ...

I'm saying that the intended effect (i.e. getting a lot of people to quit smoking) is not achieved but that there is still a small effect (that probably isn't worth it).

Re: Tea Party Democrats

Why would it? It would just mean the corporations don't have to bother with influencing the government.

How does that work?

Well if the government doesn't even involve itself with making regulations as to what and what is not allowed then companies don't need to care about it.

If the ...

why have a 2% tax on cigarettes instead of a 90% tax?

I'm not sure how one can argue the merits of government while at the same time lamenting the control of government by corporations. It's rather inconsistent.
Really? The government is the only thing keeping corporations from utterly stomping on us even more than they do.

So you don't think ...

You don't want state's rights. You want a very strong federal government that doesn't infringe.

The reason you don't want the states to have more power is because the federal government has already subdued them, not because they naturally migrated to a stronger federal government.

I'm not asking if England is geographically located in Europe, I am asking if you believe the English are a European culture in the traditional sense of that word. And I'm asking about the English only, not the Scottish, Welsh, et. al.

I haven't enjoyed the last 20 years of indoctrination by the ...
