Just picked up my girlfriends engagement ring, (pics)

Post by RustyMonkey »

I plan on asking in the next couple of weeks. Ask me anything.

Also, how should I go about asking her parents for their blessing? I'm really nervous about that.

Just ask them. If they say "no", tell them to go f*ck themselves.

Ask them. And tell them how much their daughter means to you and all of that other good stuff. You really do not want to follow AOG's latter advice, on the off chance that you may ostrascize yourself (and quite possibly your GF/fiance too) from them.
"Eh, whatever."

Hmm, no pics of the fiance?

A bit of a letdown.

When ol' Saxi got engaged I injected my future bethrothed's parents with 10 cc's of Amobarbital each and then shot the family dog in front of them with my old Makarov service pistol.

I then screamed -

SIE IST MEINE!

- and gave everyone a firm, open-handed slap across the face.

It worked for Saxi* and that basic formula will probably work for you, too, but you should put a spin on it to make it your own. Put it in your own words. Really amp up the romance. You only get married once or twice.

(* unfortunately she called off the engagement a few months later and Saxi has been a swinging single ever since)

Do you realize that if you marry you'll leave CC for a few months, even a year? Not to mention Monkey Business AKA The Bumpage.

Who is willing to marry Player57832? I'll pay $100 to the first man to step forward.

I didn't ask my wife's parents for any blessing. Then again, we were living together for 6 years before we got engaged so asking for permission seemed kind of silly and disingenuous.

Congratulations!
Asking a blessing is appropriate if you have met her parents, if you both are a tad tradtitional and you are at least reasonably sure of getting a positive answer. If you want to ask her parent's blessing, pick a time to talk to her dad privately first, in person. Ideally you should have a bit of time

Replace their drink with a poison.

Tell them you have the antidote and will only give it to them if they say yes.

First of all, I would have asked her parents for their blessing BEFORE buying the ring. That's just me. <smile> But I like that you are...that's an old tradition that seems to have started to die off.

However, I think the best way to ask her parents is in person and in a setting that's private and comfortable (as much as it can be) for both of you.

Nice ring.

That's what I did. I felt it was a good blend between the traditional asking for permission and more modern not informing at all.

By the way, that's a nifty ring-box.

i don't think I'd ask, because the way I see it I don't need their permission. This is something between their daughter and I. I also think that a girl might be a little upset if she didn't get the opportunity to express the information to her parents first herself. You might be able to talk to her dad about it, and ask him to keep it a secret from his wife so that his daughter can tell her mom. Do girls get mad if you do that?

What are you going to do if they say no?
What if they try to talk you out of it?
What if they tell you she's not ready and to wait a year? That both of you aren't ready and wait a year?

Oh, and it's all going to go just fine. No need to worry. Congratulations and have fun! I wish you two the best and post some pics of your beautiful bride so we can all be jealous.

What was that movie where the guy announced to a roomful of family friends and relatives that he and his girlfriend were getting married...and he hadn't even asked her?

I don't plan on asking their PERMISSION. I plan on asking for their blessing. If they say no, or that I am not ready... I still plan on asking. It's more of a respect thing, she is her own person to "give away." I am worried about asking because her mom has always been a bit of an overprotective helicopter parent, and still remains that way even though she isn't a teenager anymore, she has moved out, etc.

We have talked about if they say no and try to convince her otherwise, and she still plans on saying yes.
