[17-June-2008] RAM upgrade to the DB server

Post by Twill »

Some of you may have noticed some more downtime this morning, but unlike the weekend's downtime, this was good downtime.

Over the last few weeks, we've watched the load on the database server slowly creeping up as more and more people join the site and new plugins begin eating up extra DB queries. There was still plenty of growing room and nobody should have noticed any slowdowns, but everyone who remembers March will remember how painful a slow DB server can be.

To make sure we don't have to go through that again, CC now has 4GB more RAM in the DB box, bringing the total up to 12GB.

If you're going to add capacity, you might as well add capacity for 10,000-15,000 new active members, right? :)

Lackattack is also working with plugin developers to bring down their resource usage a bit and make their process requests more efficient.

All in all, this essentially means that you should see absolutely no difference from yesterday.
Thankfully it also means that you will see absolutely no difference tomorrow, and hopefully ever.

Thanks to all of you for making CC what it is. Without you, we wouldn't need more power in our servers. Spread the word and lets see how fast we can use up the RAM (in a good way!)

Half of the time - I get the feeling that lack's idea of a memory upgrade involves wiring up 6 of these...

If you're still seeing slowing, could you post it in the suggestion and bug reports forum?

It may have been table repairs and database recovery still left over from this weekend.

timeouts, error reports, and a new one - being locked out. am still managing to play turns but with difficulty. all very clunky and I wouldn't even attempt a complicated move unless I really had to. keep working on it twill. =D>

Hey folks, if you're still getting timeouts could you post them over in the Suggestions and Bug Reports forum so that we can track them properly?

Thanks :)

Possible translation: the new features (i.e., plug-in's) are resource hogs?

Just imagining the number of queries needed to determine "unique opponents" for purposes of medals makes me think it's sort of a recursive problem, so why not just adjust your medals criteria to something that is not so resource intensive. I mean, reality is that saying you've beaten 400 unique players is a nice thing, but it seems to be generally agreed that playing more games will eventually get everyone there at some point.
My ever constant two last games seem to have no end in sight!
