The bill reinstates a ban, which existed before but apparently expired, on owning or making a "semiautomatic assault weapon or a large capacity ammunition feeding device." Do you need a semiautomatic assault weapon to defend yourself against intruders? Do you carry a weapon with a large capacity ammunition feeding device when you venture into the big city, just in case? Would you keep this gun in your living room gun case, in your closet, or above the fireplace, or would you just use it as decorative furniture?

Ah! But look at how long the ban has been lifted! I'm a firm believer in states rights, I say let them choose which guns need a ban.
BUT other things like 30 round 9mm clips are a bit excessive anyway.... I dunno.. I'd like this to remain a local thing... Texans obviously can handle this stuff.... but on the other hand I can understand it.

That's great news.

It's about time. Too many assault weapons have made their way into the hands of the criminal element in this nation in the last several years, and it IS possible to convert semi-auto guns into fully auto. It's of course illegal, and the ATF will probably miss having more work to do, but for the general populace, that is great news.

It brings us all greater security.

I disagree with you dave......criminal will always have guns...and how many criminals use $1000 weapons? They sell them for drugs.....

...no you dont need a mini 14 with a flash suppressor and a 30 catridge clip to hunt with...and it makes a shitty home def weapon as the .223 will pass right thru your burglar, the wall and into your child.....

BUT....as a card carrying gun nut, I think they are very COOL.

Who here collects anything because it makes them happy? Hammers? Octode rectifiers? Glass figurines? Well I collect guns....I use them to target shoot and enjoy...I use them safely and they are inaccessible to intruders and accessible only to me. I have a couple "assault" rifles whick now will double in value with the silly ban (again).

You'd really hate the next weapon I plan on buying...it is completely useless in the real world.....lol.

2 cents spent..........

Dog, all due respect, but they buy them with drug money. And then shoot little kids by mistake, cause they're spraying their assault rifles out of moving cars or whatever. The problem is the volume of bullets involved, and how that impacts bystanders while essentially making it significantly easier for the criminals to outclass the police in firepower in every encounter.

Oh, and the answer to how many criminals use $1000 weapons is: way too many.

I'm pretty sure an AK47 only goes for approximately $400 on the street these days (or perhaps the price has risen since I read that article about it a couple years ago). And although they are illegal guns, they were easier for the black market gun traders to acquire due to the lifting of the assault weapon ban however many years ago it was.

Machine guns aren't available to the general public anyway.

That's right. Only criminals and terrorists should be allowed to have them.

You can legally purchase one for ABOUT $600 and can have it "optioned out" for between $800 and $1000 in Wisconsin. I know lots of people who own them.

The amoutn of time this has set kinda worries me a little though. Why re-instate the law now?

You're joking, right? You're going to go out there with a semiautomatic weapon to fight the criminals with their semiautomatic weapons? Are you going to buy a personal nuke to defend yourself from terrorists? Are you going to hijack your own plain so that you can crash it into saudi arabia?

KoolBak wrote:I disagree with you dave......criminal will always have guns...and how many criminals use $1000 weapons? They sell them for drugs.....

Criminals would have plenty of use for a semiautomatic weapon...

The thing is, if every other state bans semiautomatic assault weapons, it's not going to be effective in the least. If they're legal in texas, then they're going to get to New Mexico easily.

The fact is, the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with guns that were legally purchased at some point, either by the criminal or by the person the criminal gets the gun from. If it's illegal to make a semiautomatic weapon, there's going to be a lot less of them around. It's easy to get an legal gun to a criminal, but it's a lot harder to manufacture illegal semiautomatic weapons.

If we ever encounter a tyrannical government or are subject to a foreign nation invading you may wish more of these items were in circulation.

Note that one of the first measures that these guys passed was to take guns away from the general population.

If it is just decorative furniture then what's the harm? Once again home defense becomes alot more tricky when we're talking about defending against entities who are armed with the kind of weapons they are trying to take away.

There are to many guns that are owned by criminals but stating that this is somehow a result of legal gun purchases shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the problem. Most illegal weapons come into the country through the southern border from Mexico. It would be funny how many people mock efforts to secure the nations border's borrowing the line from a certain animated satire, "they took our jobs!" if so much weren't at stake.

It's also relevant that the definition of an "assault weapon" is completely arbitrary and did not exist before the orriginal ban.
Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Folding stock
Conspicuous pistol grip
Bayonet mount
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device which enables the launching or firing of rifle grenades)
Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or silencer
Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
A semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm
Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
Detachable magazine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban

Under the ban you could have a semi automatic rifle with a pistol grip and you could have a semi automatic rifle with a folding stock, but if a semi automatic rifle had a pistol grip and a folding stock it would be considered an "assault weapon." This is laughable as neither of these features actually affect the function of the gun but instead reflect the aesthetic preferences of the gun owner.

If you are considering buying one of these weapons now is the time to do it. Prices are only going up and items are flying off shells with the looming prospect of an Obama presidency. Target Master is a good place to buy, I bought a Saiga 12 at one on monday and I recomend it to anyone who is seriously considering buying a military grade weapon at a bargain price. It's highly customizable and built to last...

ImageBasic Saiga 12

Image A few of the more exotic modifications.

Also, unlike a regular AK or an AR15 the Saiga 12 is a shotgun, which means that even if they ban military grade ammunition, you will likely still be able to purchase ammo for this gun as 12 Gauge isn't going anywhere. The gun runs for about $600 on average as opposed to other "assault weapons" which can run for thousands and face the prospect of using obselete ammo.

Fair point, but you forget sir, that this is America. I can get anything that I want here, for a price. Or I can always go to Mexico. If you want these guns, you can get them either way.
The guns are less dangerous than the clips IMO. It's the clips you need to worry about!

And I would like to also point out that there are several states (Indiana for example) in which you can legally own machine guns, operating tanks, and all sorts of exotic hardware.

I still see this as a case for the states, again using the two examples I put forth. Texans can conceal all sorts of firearms legally and they are one of the cheapest states to acquire them. A resident of Indiana can purchase a luggar, and ammunition for it. These options are there, yet I don't see them being exploited to any alarming rate. It's working for them is what I'm saying.

Ah, butt-chin... So nice of you to always insist that law abiding citizens aught to be stripped of their weapons while criminals surely will find access to them.

My hope is that the economy tanks utterly, and that chaos and anarchy ensues so bad that there will be mass riots in the streets, and all the big cities will burn to the ground. I think that our piece of shit government deserves that.

There's no surefire way to stop criminals from having them- you have to start somewhere.

its funny... my god dictates to me this one single truth...

if I am in a situation with another human being that wishes to kill me... I should kill him first. If one f us must die, it is better that it be him. And yet, I should never be the aggressor.
