| The history of the crossword puzzle is debated. Several puzzles of similar structure were developed and published around the world. Arthur Wynne, a journalist from Liverpool, England, is considered the inventor of what we today call the crossword puzzle. His first puzzle was published on 21 December 1913 in the New York World. The puzzle became a weekly addition to the paper and soon the game spread to other newspapers. The 'fad' grew during the 1920's with varying opinions on whether or not the puzzle was beneficial or even harmful to society. |
